The seventh installment in the controversial Grand Theft Auto series – one of the most popular game franchises in history that brought Rockstar Games company international fame. The series has been letting the player start as a petty criminal and work his way to the top of the criminal underground. This next part of the series is the biggest one so far, featuring world – the State of San Andreas – almost three times larger than Vice City. Among many innovations, there are several thing worthy of mention: improved AI of civilians, option to recruit gang members, increased number of interactive buildings, hunger factor, swimming, and new means of transportation (e.g. bicycles). On top of that, there game features numerous extra activities, highlighting the sandbox character of gameplay. The game features the atmosphere of the 1990s, apparent in both the graphics and the soundtrack available via the numerous in-game radio stations.

The game’s graphics were noticeably improved, featuring all sorts of new visual effects. The soundtrack keeps equally high level, as usually featuring songs by famous artists across a wide spectrum of genres.

Unfortunately, the job is suddenly hindered when Carver’s ship is sunk by an unknown military unit, his client vanishes, and Carver himself ends up shipwrecked on a tropical island filled with soldiers. The protagonist has to make use of his extraordinary skills retained from military service to come out unscratched of this situation. The sandbox gameplay of Far Cry doesn’t force any order, giving players a freedom in exploring the tropical setting and completing tasks. The game's impressive visuals are powered by the CryEngine.

Once again, the player assumes the role of Gordon Freeman – a doctor of physics who used to work in Black Mesa Labs, where an unfortunate incident opened a portal for alien life forms to invade the Earth. This time, the story takes us into a fictional City 17 and its immediate vicinity. The protagonist now works for a secret government organization. His mission is to repel the invaders from another dimension, in which he is aided by Alyx Vance – a young women fighting as a part of human resistance. The sequel introduces a technological revolution, employing the Valve’s proprietary game engine called Source. Its main advantage is excellent physics simulation, letting players destroy almost any element of environment and use various objects as covers or even weapons.

He managed to turn back time and prevent releasing The Sands of Time, but he did not change his destiny, resulting in Guardian of Time chasing him to seal his fate. He travels to the mysterious island where, according to the legends, the Sands were made; the prince attempts to change the past and prevent their creation, thus saving himself from the fate. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within has a much darker atmosphere, but the gameplay is similar to its predecessor. Our hero must overcome many obstacles and traps, not to mention enemies. Game introduces a new, expanded fighting system, with prince himself becoming stronger and gaining new abilities.

The creators faithfully recreated such historical elements as different military units, machines and technologies the ancient nations depended on. As usual, the gameplay is divided into two phases. The player makes large-scope decisions in the turn-based mode featuring the world map - for example, concerning technological development, diplomacy, development of cities or army management. The battles, on the other hand, are played in real time and the player commands particular formations or individual units. Rome: Total War includes the features introduced by the previous installments, such as sieges of cities, reconnaissance or reserves. Apart from the single-player campaign, the game offers multiplayer for up to 8 competitors.

The arsenal has been expanded along with list of available vehicles, and the capabilities of enemy artificial intelligence have been significantly improved. Also, the second Halo introduces environmental destruction, resulting in an even more realistic world and forcing players to use various tactics. Multiplayer options have been expanded with the addition of new game modes.

The action takes place in a secret research facility of the UAC corporation on Mars, where the protagonist, an ex-marine whom we control, begins his service. Shortly thereafter, strange things begin to happen: the lab comes under attack, the communications with the HQ are severed, and the people we encounter turn into bloodthirsty monsters. It turns out that a space-time portal was opened as a result of an experiment, which led to a demon incursion that we have to repel. Compared to its predecessors from the past decade, Doom 3 offers not only fast-paced and incredibly bloody action but also quite extensive plot as well as a number of horror elements. The game also features high-quality graphics.

EverQuest II is a follow-up to an immensely popular MMORPG, released five years after the original. It was developed by Daybreak Game Company, a studio which created the whole franchise. The game is set in the land of Norrath, perfectly known to all the fans, which was enhanced with many new locations. The list of changes also includes the character creator: before the beginning of the game, the players can select the race, looks, and gender of their avatar – the statistics and specialization of the character are determined later on in the game. EverQuest II also introduces new means of transportation (you can travel both on horseback and aboard a boat), as well as new events (such as gladiator duels), and the whole gameplay premise has been altered in many aspects; for example, experience can now be gained by peaceful conduct as well – for instance by developing craftsmanship, trading skills, magic abilities, or elements of the inventory. If compared with the prequel, Ever Quest II can boast substantially better graphics, spearheaded by high-resolution textures, complex weather effects, and rich animations.

Action of the installment, developed this time by the EA's internal studio, focuses on the US-Japan conflict during the World War II in the Pacific region. In the game we take part in a series of missions taking place in jungles, military bases and warships – fighting both alone and alongside other members of our squad – starting from the historic attack on Pearl Harbor base and ending with the famous battle of Guadalcanal. Compared with the original, Pacific Assault features much more cutscenes, illustrating ongoing events and changes in the psyche of the protagonist. Individual missions are also characterized by increased degree of non-linearity, which allows us to complete them in several different ways. Concerning technical aspects, the game is built on improved Quake III engine, used in the first installment of the series.

The mechanics of the game are virtually the same as its predecessor's, being a combination of strategy with FPS elements. The players are divided into two teams, and the objective of each is reducing the opposite teams' tickets to zero by killing the opponents or capturing their flags. Just like in Battlefield 1942, you can play as a soldier of your chosen class and use various military vehicles. Singleplayer fans can also test their mettle against AI-controlled foes.

The game is characteristic for its original mechanic that enables the player to take direct control over a given unit – a well-aimed shot can disable a tank by tearing its tracks, while soldiers can be hurt or killed through efficient aiming. Soldiers: Heroes of World War II also employs advanced AI modules (the soldiers can scour the area, or encircle the enemy), and detailed 3D graphics, as well as destructible environments.

The game was released as a result of cooperation between the publisher THQ and Relic Entertainment, the studio known for Homeworld, among other games. The story of Dawn of War focuses on one of the many conflicts in the world of Warhammer. It focuses on Gabriel Angelos – the leader of Blood Ravens chapter of the Space Marines - who tries to stop an Ork invasion on his planet. Similarly as in the majority of real-time strategies, the essence of the game is leading troops during combat. Thanks to the unique setting and various futuristic weapons, the battles are spectacular and very brutal. The game lacks the typical resource gathering element, usually used for improving the base. Instead, the resource system was based on conquering and controlling key locations. The way how units look is worth mentioning – they are based on authentic figurines created by Games Workshop.

This time, Garrett's quest is to stop a long-prophesied advent of an era of darkness, which requires him to steal valuable treasures and artifacts from different parts of the city. But things take an unexpected turn when Garrett inadvertently awakens the ancient evil, and becomes considered a traitor by the members of his guild. In terms of game mechanics, the title does not differ significantly from its predecessors, and every mission in the game can be completed in several different ways. The main difference is the new graphic engine and body awareness mechanism through which we have much more control over the hero's actions.

In addition to having better graphics, based on the improved engine from Unreal Tournament 2003, and a new user interface, Unreal Tournament 2004 adds two new game modes: the Assault Mode from the first game and Onslaught Mode based on the similar mode from Battlefield 1942. There are nine vehicle types in Unreal Tournament 2004 and the list of available weapons was expanded. There are 20 completely new maps for the modes known from the previous game in the series. The game introduces a special system for voice communication between players and the Unreal TV that allows hundreds of spectators to watch the matches.

In Painkiller the player assumes the role of Daniel Garner, who upon dying has been assigned to stop the armies of hell led by Lucifer himself. The story told in the game is linear and the campaign is split into five chapters, each one consisting of several levels. The gameplay is based on fighting hordes of enemies – all sorts of creatures coming straight from hell as well as even more powerful bosses. Fortunately, the protagonist is far from being defenseless against those enemies – in combat he uses a vast arsenal of creative weapons, starting with classic shotguns and rocket launchers to the famous Stakegun or the so-called Shuriken-do Gun. Painkiller is characterized by high-quality graphics and realistic physics simulated by Havok 2.

It is a third-person action RPG developed by Troika Games - though not the creators of the first adaptation, they were a team popular mainly for the well-received Arcanum: Of Steamwork and Magick Obscura. VTM: Bloodlines is set in an alternative version of the modern Los Angeles, where seven vampire clans fight each other constantly. The protagonist tries to become an important figure in one such community, making use of unique abilities, such as invisibility, superhuman speed or mind control. As the main character gains experience, these abilities can be additionally developed. The player explores the virtual environment, talks to NPCs and fights enemies. In combat, the player makes use of up to twelve vampiric abilities and a wide variety of conventional weapons. The high-quality visuals were delivered thanks to the Source engine, a technology created by Valve for the purpose of running Half-Life 2.

As usual, the game features a wide variety of licensed cars belonging to such renown brands as Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ford, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Audi, Opel or Mercedes. Again, special emphasis was placed both on the driving physics and a unique damage system simulating different mechanical faults caused by collisions. Also, both the visuals and artificial intelligence of computer-controlled drivers were improved. The career is the main game mode here - it was introduced first in the previous installment. However, the game offers a multiplayer mode for up to 12 players as well.

The developers also implemented a new close quarter combat system and improved character's range of movement, which now allows you to change your position while holding enemy as a human shield.

The list of game modes was also updated, with an overall of 9 single-player modes and 7 multiplayer ones, in which up to 16 players can take part. The biggest emphasis was put on the trademark of the Burnout series, the Crash Mode, which also underwent some changes and improvements. Among them, the most important are the ability to enable the afterburner in any moment of the race, the ability to control the vehicle during the crash to cause even more destruction, or pick-ups, increasing caused damage and increasing the final score.

A sequel to the excellent adventure game created by Benoit Sokal and studio Microids. Syberia II continues the plot of the first installment - it presents the further adventures of Kate Walker, an American lawyer. Her intention of finalizing a contract led her to the adventure of her life. The game starts in the same place where the first Syberia ended – in the Russian city Romansburg. This time Kate decides to follow the trail of Hans Voralberg, the heir to an automaton factory, for her own reasons. The woman joins Hans and she helps him discover the mystery of the last living Mammoths. The greatest change in comparison to the first game lies in the quality of the graphics and the increase of the gameplay dynamics. Many new graphic effects were added, including dynamic shadows and an animated snow. Syberia II takes place in completely new locations that are much more different from each other than previously. During her adventures Kate will visit, among other places, the North-West passage and the village of the Youkol people.

A sequel to the 2001 strategy game Europa Universalis II, which focused on a 400 years period between 1419 and 1820. Crusader Kings can be considered a prologue of the previous standalone installment of the franchise, taking place earlier and allowing us to lead the European nations in the years 1066-1419. Like its predecessor, Crusader Kings is a faithful simulation of the period, taking into account diplomatic, social, military, religious and feudal relations. The greatest difference between the two games is the fact that Crusader Kings doesn't focus solely on the development of your nation, but building the prestige and influence of your dynasty. A huge innovation is the new combat system, faithfully recreating the differences in the offensive capabilities of the individual nation's units.

A remake of Ninja Gaiden — a popular arcade action game, very successful on arcade machines as well as on most major gaming platforms during the late 80s and early 90s — developed with Xbox in mind. In the game, we assume the role of the eponymous warrior named Ryu who seeks revenge on the mysterious organization called Vigoor Empire and its leader, the man responsible for murdering the protagonist’s clan and stealing the magical sword Ryuken. Fighting subsequent hordes of enemies is, as you could expect, the key gameplay element, although the Xbox version, in contrast to the original, offers fully 3D graphics with dynamic camera. The game also comes with a larger arsenal of melee weapons as well as a simple progression system, which allows us to learn new techniques and upgrade our armaments.
