Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC Twice as Popular as on Consoles

Thanks to SuperData's January report, we've learned that twice as many people played Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online on PC as on consoles last month.

Rockstar has reasons to be happy. In January this year, the number of people playing the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 (including those playing Red Dead Online) reached its highest level ever and was twice as high as on consoles. That's what's in a new report from analytics group SuperData, discussing digital game market performance for the first month of 2021.

The source of this success can be attributed to the release of the standalone version of Red Dead Online. Combined sales of that release and RDR2 in December and January totaled 1.8 million copies on PC and only 611,000 on consoles. Until February 15, the standalone RDO was also very cheap, which encouraged players to buy. According to analysts, this made even console users eager to buy the PC edition to enjoy better graphics.

There was also a lot of other interesting information in SuperData's report. Digital distribution revenue in January 2021 was $11.6 billion, up 15% from the same month in 2020. Increases were recorded across all platforms, both PC (up 31%), consoles (up 21%) and mobile (up 6%).

Valorant experienced a small renaissance in January. Compared to December, revenue was up 39% and player numbers by 29%, thanks to the debut of another season and a new character. Interestingly, among the people who played this FPS in January, but did not do so the month before, as many as 72% were veterans who abandoned the title some time ago.

Last month also saw the end of the beneficial effect of the Shadowlands expansion on the popularity of World of Warcraft. Compared to November 2020, the month of the expansion's release, revenues fell by 61% and the number of players by 41%
