Hiveswap is an adventure game based on the popular webcomic Homestuck. It was financed though a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, gathering almost 2.5 million dollars. Initially, the game was to be developed by two studios: What Pumpkin, founded by Andrew Hussie, the creator of the original comic, and Odd Gentlemen. The latter, however, abandoned the production to work on the episodic reboot of the King's Quest series together with Activision. Hussie calls Hiveswap an adventure game parody. The production features hand-drawn, smoothly animated visuals, inspired by the comic. The gameplay mechanics are typical of the point-and-click adventure games, which means there is only a single player mode available. You mostly explore locations, solve easy puzzles, and discover the story step by step.

The Descendant

An episodic adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world. It was developed by a Swedish studio Gaming Corps. The player is brought into a world where climate changes and dwindling natural resources led to a global conflict and the destruction of human civilization. However, the last humans survived in underground shelters, where they were supposed to remain in cryogenic chambers until the surface of the Earth becomes inhabitable again. The story is split into two storylines, featuring different characters and separated by hundreds of years. The gameplay consists of exploring different locations, conversations, and making difficult choices which have their consequences even hundreds of years later, in the second scenario. The game also features arcade challenges and occasional puzzles.

Darkwood

A survival horror game with a top down view. Darkwood is the first commercial project of a Polish studio, Acid Wizard, and its development has been backed up by users voting on the Steam Greenlight platform. The game takes place in a procedurally generated open world, with the player placed in the role of a character trying to survive the confrontations with supernatural beings without losing his sanity in the eponymous dark wood. During a day, the protagonist must find or construct items, which will help him fend off evil entities at night. The gameplay is relatively difficult, combining features of an action game, adventure game, and a cRPG. Simple, two-dimensional visuals are dominated by semidarkness and dark shapes, and the terrifying atmosphere is further bolstered with disturbing audio.

A third-person point-and-click espionage thriller adventure game developed by The Game Species. The action of Undercover Missions: Operation Kursk K-141 is set aboard the eponymous Russian submarine which went missing under suspicious circumstances in August of 2000. In the game we assume the role of a secret agent whose mission is to detect and capture the leader of a criminal organization that's been stealing Russian weapon systems. When her undercover partner suddenly vanishes without a trace, the protagonist has to board Kursk and gather the necessary evidence on her own before they are both buried on the bottom of the ocean. As far as gameplay is concerned, the title is a classical adventure game in which we visit nearly 50 locations, interact with characters we meet and collect items vital to solving subsequent puzzles. Moreover, we participate in over a dozen mini-games that test our skills and detective sense.

Five Nights at Freddy's

An original horror game created by Scott Cawthon, an independent gamemaker. The player assumes the role of a watchman who takes up a seasonal job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. What is important about the restaurant, is that mechanical mascots are its main attraction. A seemingly easy job turns into a true nightmare during the very first night, when the protagonist discovers that the sympathetic animatronics come to life after dark and display a hostile attitude towards humans. Trapped in a cramped watch room, the protagonist has to avoid contact with murderous robots during five subsequent nights. The task is not easy, because using various devices, such as lighting and monitoring systems, as well as locking the door drains the power supply, which has to be appropriately managed throughout the entire night. Despite its simplistic mechanics, Five Nights at Freddy's provides a good dose of anxiety and is capable of frightening the player with ease.

The story is non-linear and focuses on a gloomy household that has seen many frightening events throughout the years - it has a history of driving entire families insane, leading to numerous killings and suicides. The protagonist is trapped inside the house, and apart from getting out of there, their goal is to solve the mystery behind the place. The players explore the in-game environment, solve puzzles requiring them to manipulate various objects, and search for clues related to the dark past of the haunted estate. Avoiding contact with ghosts dwelling in the estate is a significant element of gameplay, as the protagonist is incapable of fighting them. Visage utilizes the Unreal Engine 4, which is at the source of the game's high-quality visuals. Furthermore, the game supports VR goggles, though one does not require them in order to play it.

An improved edition of the 2016 ReCore, developed by Comcept in cooperation with Armature and published by Microsoft Studios. In the game, the player assumes the role of Joule Adams, who is one of the last existing humans. She was supposed to prepare the planet of Far Eden for colonization; something went wrong, however, and now she has to fight for her life with the help of a robot called Mack. ReCore: Definitive Edition gives one access to an additional adventure entitled Eye of Obsidian, in which the player can visit previously inaccessible locations with the task to fight the Obsidian cultists. The remastered edition introduces also several additional pieces of equipment for the already known machines, new adversaries, and the T8-NK robot, which initially was planned to be added to the game in form of a paid DLC. With this robot, the player can move around the sandy areas much faster. The game allows one to experience higher resolution on both Xbox One and PC, improves the balance in comparison to the original version, and introduces High Dynamic Range (HDR) support.

The plot of Beyond Good & Evil takes place in an alternative reality, on planet Hyllis, inhabited by a peace-loving nation of humans and humanoid animals. Their world has been attacked by an aggressive Alien species, the DomZ, apparently to claim its resources. The protagonist is a young reporter named Jade who, once involved in the war, begins to reveal a conspiracy and the shocking truth behind the planet's defenders - the Alpha Sections. During her journey, the main character can count only on her camera (photos of rare plants and animals can be sold, earning us money to buy, for example, health restore items), innate investigative abilities and her trusty Dai-jo staff. Beyond Good & Evil features elements of a dynamic action game, including arcade combat, platforming, various vehicles, riddles, and a gripping plot. The locations are colorful, varied, and fully three-dimensional.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

A third-person perspective action-adventure game developed by Ninja Theory. The game is a modern adaptation of one of the most famous classics of Chinese literature, the epic Journey to the West. The action of the game takes place in the 22nd century, after the third and fourth World War. During the gameplay, we assume the role of a lone man called Monkey, who gets imprisoned by the machines ruling the world. He manages to escape along with a young woman called Trip. After the escape, the duo is forced to rely only on themselves. Although in the beginning they cannot stand each other, over time they establish a specific relationship. In Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, we fight with pursuing machines and solve puzzles, while the protagonist duo complements each other. Monkey specializes mainly in fighting, while Trip is useful in situations requiring cleverness and intelligence. She can also hack computers and squeeze through narrow passages, which are impassable for her companion.

The Neverhood takes us to a plasticine world, where we control a character named Klaymen. Our hero’s task is to retrieve the crown of his creator and father Hoborg, which, after it was stolen, allowed the thief, Klogg, to take over the world of Neverhood. The gameplay itself follows typical adventure game standards, with players exploring locations, collecting items, and solving various logical puzzles. However, the game’s unique feature is its innovative, fully plasticine world, created using more than three tons of plasticine and a unique stop motion animation technique, known as claymation.
