A video game publisher owned by Take-Two Interactive, based in Novato, California. Games under the 2K Games label are primarily released for PCs and consoles.
The history of 2K Games begins in January 2005, when Take-Two Interactive acquired the Visual Concepts studio, the Kush Games team, and the 2K brand from Sega. The day after, two publishing brands were set up: 2K Sports, for sports games, and 2K Games, which we're focusing on here.
Originally headquartered in New York City, 2K Games and 2K Sports moved to Novato, California, in January 2006 after a major fire damaged their offices. In 2007, a third company, 2K Play, was added to the 2K family, focusing on casual games.
Over time, 2K Games has brought several studios under its umbrella. Leading the way are Firaxis Games, a studio specializing in strategy games and known for the XCOM series and Sid Meier's Civilization; Irrational Games, the creators of the best-selling BioShock series; and 2K Czech, developers of the first two Mafia games.
The company also established new studios, including Cloud Chamber (founded in 2019), 2K Marin (founded in 2007, responsible for titles such as BioShock 2 and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified), and Hangar 13 (founded in 2014, joined by former 2K Czech developers to oversee the Mafia franchise).
In May 2017, Christoph Hartmann, one of the company's founders, stepped down as president of 2K Games and was succeeded by David Ismailer.
The next major milestone in 2K Games' history occurred in 2024. Take-Two Interactive acquired Gearbox Software and Gearbox Publishing from Embracer Group on March 28th, forming The Gearbox Entertainment Company. Along with these two companies, Take-Two Interactive also acquired franchises such as Borderlands, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem. From that point on, they would operate under the 2K Games banner.
