In the Cloudspire Outskirts area you will find the next main boss, Ming General - Liu Cheng'en. To reach him, you first have to defeat the General of the North - Ai Nengqi. Fortunately, our Wuchang Fallen Feathers guide will help you defeat both of these challenging bosses.

Ming General - Liu Cheng'en in a nutshell

  1. Liu Cheng'en is a boss who can inflict Frostbite on you. If your status bar fills completely, it will reduce your maximum stamina by half. You will get tired much faster. For this reason, it’s worth having items that remove this status and armor that boosts Frost resistance.
  2. When the boss is approaching you without attacking, he'll always sidestep your first attack. It's best not to use skills that consume a lot of Skyborn Might - especially as an opening move- since you’ll likely miss and waste the valuable resource.
  3. Attacks that can Clash or Deflect work best in this fight. The boss uses a lot of different offensive moves, and most of them take a while to finish. That’s why it’s a good idea to use the techniques mentioned above, as they let you minimize incoming damage while landing hits of your own.
  4. The Ming General is weak to Corruption, so it’s worth equipping Temperance with this status effect. Once it’s applied, the boss will take damage over time. The damage will be quite high, since it scales with the enemy’s max HP.
  5. The enemy's back is a weak spot, so try to get behind him and attack him there if you don't have any Clash attacks.
  6. The Ming General’s grab always comes out with a sound cue beforehand. Pay attention to it so you can quickly figure out what the boss is about to do, especially since this attack deals massive damage.

Ming General - Liu Cheng'en's attacks

  1. Triple jump and slam - the opening attack. He also uses it when you're far away. The boss jumps three times and attacks every time he lands. Each jump is a little slower than the last, so time your movement to dodge perfectly and earn Skyborn Might.
  1. Spear stab - first, the boss does a sweeping blow to the side, and will start stabbing his spear straight at you. This can be done several times (up to 5 times). Each attack inflicts Frostbite.
  1. Cold explosion - the Ming General will stand still and slam his spear into the ground. It sets off a small explosion. He’ll then spin his weapon around, creating a gust of cold that damages you and applies Frostbite if you get caught in the attack.
  1. Sword spin - in the second phase of the fight, the boss switches to using a sword. He'll lunge at you, spinning his sword around. After a short while on the ground, he quickly spins around twice.
  2. Grab - when one of his hands looks like it’s about to grab you and you hear the bell sound, the boss is about to lunge at you. If he hits you, an animation will trigger and you’ll take unavoidable damage.
  1. Stomp and two thrusts - the Ming General begins by stomping his foot forward to obscure his next attacks, which are two quick, straight sword thrusts.
  2. Kunai throw - the opponent can also throw his kunai twice in a horizontal line. Each one applies Frostbite.

How to fight Ming General - Liu Cheng'en?

Wait for the boss to attack first. If you attack first instead, there's a high chance the boss will dodge all of your hits and immediately counterattack. Get offensive either when he’s attacking - if you have moves with the Clash or Deflect ability - or right after he finishes his combo.

A good strategy in the first phase is to keep your distance and bait Ming General into using his triple jump. This attack is fairly easy to avoid, and it gives you a chance to earn up to three Skyborn Might. These are great for casting defensive spells like Divine Ward, which you can get from the Panda in exchange for three Bamboo.

You can also use Skyborn Might to use spells that apply Corruption to enemies. This status can be applied fairly quickly, causing Liu Cheng'en to lose a significant amount of health without even being attacked. It is especially worth using when the boss creates an ice cloud, as he stays still and is vulnerable to ranged attacks.

In the second phase, the boss becomes more aggressive and uses a slightly different set of attacks, so fighting from a distance might not be effective. It’s worth noting that most of his attacks - except for ice explosions - can be negated using Deflect, Block, or Clash skills.

One of his more dangerous attacks - two quick spins - needs to be avoided fast. After his first attack, when he starts his first spin on the ground, dodge way before he attacks. If you wait for the perfect moment to dodge, you won’t have enough time to dodge again, as the boss spins too quickly.

As for his grab - his second most dangerous attack - whenever you hear the bell ring, dodge to the side immediately. This attack always moves in a straight line and covers a long distance.
