How do you play as the Hexblade subclass in Baldur's Gate 3? Our guide will shed some light on it and help you learn about the new Warlock subclass. We have compiled the most important and unique options available for the Hexblade subclass, including imposing curses and raising Accursed Spectres to assist you in battle. This knowledge will help you create a build and achieve better results on the battlefield as a Hexblade Warlock.

The Hexblade subclass in BG3 was made available in Patch 8, which was released in April 2025. It wasn't available in the earlier versions of the game.

What are the assumptions of the Hexblade subclass?

  1. Hexblade is a subclass that transforms your Warlock into a dark knight. You can choose it at level 1. You become very dangerous in both hand-to-hand combat, thanks to the enchanted weapon, and at a distance, here, thanks to the powerful, iconic Warlock cantrip, Eldritch Blast. You can also cast a powerful curse, especially useful against bosses, and summon spectres from the corpses of defeated enemies.
  2. Charisma is definitely the most important statistic for a Hexblade, and you should prioritize it, as it affects both your melee attacks and spells. Also, make sure your Constitution is high and put 14 points in Dexterity (you don't need any more than this; 14 Dexterity is enough to maximize the HP gained from medium armor).

Most important features of this subclass

  1. At level 1, you will receive a lot of bonuses that make Hexblade a very effective subclass for multiclassing. Hex Warrior will give you proficiency in military weapons, shields, and medium armor. Bind Hexed Weapon will allow you to enchant the weapon you hold - from now on, instead of Strength or Dexterity, you will use Charisma for attacks. This weapon cannot be dropped or thrown away, it deals magical damage, you immediately gain proficiency in it, and when attacking enemies with it, you have a chance to inflict a curse on them that increases the damage dealt. You can cast this curse manually, once per short rest.
  2. At level 6, you unlock the Accursed Spectre feature. When the target you've cursed dies, you can use this reaction to turn their soul into a spectre. You cannot control the spectre, but it will fight on your side. It can attract enemies closer, teleport to them, or drain health from them to heal you. The larger the killed enemy, the more powerful the spectre.
  3. At level 10, you will receive the Armor of Hexes feature. When the enemy you've cursed attacks you, you can use this reaction to activate the feature. Then, you'll have a 50% chance that the attack will be completely nullified.
  4. The list of available spells will also be expanded with new spells that you can learn. At level 1, you can learn Shield and Wrathful Smite. At level 3: Blur and Branding Smite. At level 5: Blink and Elemental Weapon. At level 7: Phantasmal Killer and Staggering Smite, and at level 9: Cone of Cold and Banishing Smite.

How to play as a Hexblade?

  1. While playing as a Hexblade, you are deadly dangerous both in close and ranged combat. You have access to many powerful weapons as well as the best offensive cantrip in the game, which is Eldritch Blast (make sure you have purchased the Agonizing Blast Eldritch Invocation, which drastically increases the damage of the Eldritch Blast).
  2. You also have many powerful spells at your disposal, which, if you're a Warlock, are always cast at the highest possible level, and your spell slots are renewed after a short rest. The spells are mainly various types of smites, which are powerful melee attacks with bonus effects. The list also includes Cone of Cold, which is a destructive spell with a huge area of effect. As a Hexblade, you focus almost exclusively on dealing damage and you are very good at it.
