On this page of the Baldur's Gate 3 guide, you will learn the most important features of the Path of the Giant subclass, available for the Barbarian class. This subclass allows you to grow, significantly strengthening your Throw attacks and giving access to elemental damage.

The Giant subclass in BG3 was made available in Patch 8, which released in April 2025. In earlier versions of the game, this subclass was not available in the Barbarian class.

Who is the Giant subclass for?

  1. The Giant subclass is simple, not too complex, but very effective at the same time. You can choose it at level 3. This subclass is based on one mechanic: throwing. If you want to throw weapons, found objects, barrels, furniture, throw enemies into an abyss or throw them at other opponents, this is a perfect subclass for you. In addition, it has a minor elemental mechanic, which allows you to exploit the vulnerabilities of the enemies you encounter.
  2. Strength is a key statistic for this subclass and you'll want to have as much of it as possible. Your second priority is Constitution, followed by Dexterity. As soon as possible, preferably at level 4, purchase the Tavern Brawler feat as well, which will drastically increase the damage you'll deal by throwing and performing unarmed attacks.

Most important features of this subclass

  1. At level 3, you unlock your key feature - Giant's Rage. Entering a Rage increases your size, allowing you to lift and throw heavier opponents and objects. You also receive a bonus to damage dealt by throws. Additionally, you receive all the benefits of regular Rage. The Vaprak's Greed feat increases your carrying capacity, allowing you to carry more weapons and throwable items. You will also learn the Thaumaturgy cantrip.
  2. At level 5, you will receive the Boot of the Giants skill. It combines a shoving attack with an unarmed one. By using a bonus action, you can perform a powerful kick that deals damage, pushes back the target and can even affect heavy enemies.
  3. At level 6, you unlock the Elemental Cleaver skill. When you enter a Rage, you can use this skill for free to imbue your weapon with elemental energy. You can choose fire, cold, lightning, acid, or thunder energy. Until the end of your Rage, the imbued elemental weapon deals additional 1d6 damage from the chosen element, becomes a thrown weapon and automatically returns to you after being thrown.
  4. At level 10, you will unlock the Mighty Impel skill. You can now throw objects and opponents by using a bonus action.

How to play as a Giant Barbarian?

  1. In terms of mechanics, a Giant is one of the easiest classes in the game. Throw your weapons, objects and enemies. The whole subclass is based on dealing ranged damage, knocking enemies off from great heights and throwing them at other opponents. Fill your equipment with thrown weapons - spears, axes, daggers, even bombs and barrels. The Throw skill will allow you to throw using the main action, while Mighty Impel will get you a powerful boost through the bonus action.
  2. In Act 1, in the Goblin Camp, buy a Returning Pike from one of the local merchants. It returns to you after you throw it and will remain your best weapon until level 6, when you will have an opportunity to apply the same effect to any other weapon thanks to Elemental Cleaver.
