How to recruit Lump the Enlightened?
Lump the Enlightened can be found in a ruined house in the Blighted Village, along with two other ogres. Upon approaching him, a conversation will automatically begin - to avoid a fight, you must pass a Deception check (DC 10) or show him the Mark of the Absolute (which you likely don't have - the mark can be obtained in the goblin camp, and to get there, you must pass through the Blighted Village where Lump is located).
If you manage to avoid the fight, you can try to recruit Lump and his companions. You can do this by paying him 500 gold upfront, promising him 1,000 gold upon his summoning (Deception check, DC 10), or convincing him to join for free (Persuasion check, DC 20). When recruited, Lump will give you a horn that you can use to summon him. Using the horn in battle will immediately summon the ogres, who will prove to be very powerful allies. However, the horn only works in the Wilderness and the Underdark, so don't hold onto it for too long. Additionally, the ogres will kill anyone, not just enemies, so avoid summoning them near friendly NPCs. The horn is best used during a fight with a githyanki patrol or Dror Ragzlin in the abandoned temple of Selune.
How to defeat Lump the Enlightened?
If you can't avoid a fight, you'll have to kill Lump. He is a dangerous enemy due to his magical abilities - he can cast spells on himself that make him harder to hit and use ranged spells. Therefore, you should prioritize him as a target during the fight. The other ogres do not know magic, but they still deal very high damage both in melee and at range by throwing stones at you.
The environment plays a significant role in this encounter. In front of the house, there is a ladder that allows you to climb onto the damaged roof - shoot at the ogres from there since you have a height advantage. However, be careful, as one of the columns supporting the upper floor is weakened. If you stand on the section of the floor it supports, the ogres can destroy the column, causing you to fall to the ground floor.
Ogres have a lot of health but low armor class and Wisdom. Therefore, they are easy to hit or incapacitate with a spell, such as Tasha's Hideous Laughter. Try to eliminate Lump as quickly as possible, then target the remaining ogres. You can also distract them by giving them another target, for example, with a Cleric's spell like Flaming Sphere. The most optimal way to defeat the ogres, however, is not to fight them in the village - you can also attack them after recruiting and summoning them during a challenging battle. The ogres will then be weakened after the tough battle, making it much easier to get rid of them.
Rewards for defeating Lump the Enlightened
For defeating Lump the Enlightened, you will receive the Warped Headband of Intellect. It is a helmet that immediately sets the Intelligence of the character wearing it to 17. The headband is situational - extremely useful for very specific builds but useless for anyone else. Some subclasses (e.g. eldritch knight, arcane archer, or arcane trickster) require Intelligence as their second-highest stat. With the headband, they can achieve a high stat without needing to invest points in Intelligence. The headband is not very useful for other classes - no one else needs Intelligence, and wizards, the class that relies on it, ultimately want more than 17 points.
