Where is the Phase Spider Matriarch?
The Phase Spider Matriarch is located in the Whispering Depths. This is a large cave that you can access by interacting with the well in the middle of the Blighted Village. Enter the well to go straight to the cave.
Before heading to the main part of the cave, take the side path leading from the entrance to reach a small workshop. Here, inside a chest, you will find the Spiderstep Boots, which you should equip on your main melee character. The cave is full of webs, and stepping on them inflicts Enwebbed status and immobilizes you. These boots make the hero immune to the Enwebbed status, so they will be very useful here.
Phase Spider Matriarch awaits you at the end of the cave. Before you start the battle, we recommend sneaking up to the arena and destroying as many spider eggs as possible with ranged attacks. During the fight, new opponents will emerge from them, so ensure your advantage by destroying the eggs. Because the eggs are laid in small clusters, a single elemental arrow (e.g. acid arrow) should destroy several eggs at once. In the arena, there are three clusters of six eggs each, two on stone columns, and one on the ground. Make sure you also have access to ranged fire damage (e.g. Fire Bolt Cantrip). You might also find some use for moves that repel enemies, such as the Thunderwave spell.
How to defeat the Phase Spider Matriarch?
Phase Spider Matriarch fights exactly the same as regular phase spiders. Each turn, it teleports to a different location and spits a binding web or a powerful poisonous projectile at you. She also has a very strong melee attack. Fortunately, this powerful opponent can be easily defeated by using the environment and fall damage.
As soon as the Matriarch steps onto one of the webs, shoot the web with a fire projectile or any other source of fire damage to burn it. The boss will then fall from a great height, which will take away about one-third of her health. When she gets back up, she will teleport to a higher ledge again, allowing you to repeat the process. Alternatively, you can also knock her down using repelling effects, such as the Thunderwave spell, a repelling maneuver (Fighter, Battle Master subclass), or the Eldritch Blast modified with the Repelling Blast invocation (Warlock). Unfortunately, the boss is too large to be pushed down with a simple shove. Three falls from a height should kill the Matriarch. If you manage to push the boss into the large hole on the arena floor, she will die instantly.
A significant problem will be the other enemies, namely two regular phase spiders and hordes of spiderlings that may hatch from the Matriarch's eggs. In this fight, area spells will definitely come in handy, allowing you to thin out the enemy ranks a bit.
In honor mode, the Matriarch gains an additional ability. Once per round, if you deal damage to another opponent besides her, she will automatically wrap your hero in a cocoon. The hero is completely immobilized and defenseless for three turns, after which they explode, taking massive damage that usually means certain death. The cocoon can only be destroyed by dealing fire or acid damage to the hero. Therefore, attack only the boss or destroy all the eggs before starting the fight to prevent other enemies from appearing.
Rewards for defeating the Phase Spider Matriarch
Searching the Matriarch's corpse, you will find the Poisoner's Robe - it increases the poison damage dealt by your spells. Unfortunately, it is practically useless. There are few spells that deal poison damage, and none are particularly good.
A much more interesting reward is the Dark Amethyst lying on the ground right next to the huge hole. It will allow you to open the book of necromancy, which you will find in the apothecary's basement in the Blighted Village. Additionally, the aforementioned huge hole is one of several entrances to the Underdark. To survive the jump, however, you must first cast the Feather Fall spell on yourself.
