Rescue the Gnome is a quest in the first act of the game Baldur's Gate 3. It is a very short and simple quest, but it opens a storyline that continues throughout the game. In this guide, we have described how to save Barcus Wroot from the goblins.

How to save Barcus Wroot?

You can start the quest in the Blighted Village. Near the local windmill, you will find a gnome named Barcus tied to it, along with a group of goblins holding him captive. During the conversation with the goblins, you can choose to fight them or drive them away using a skill check (Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion). If you fail, you will have to fight the goblins. Focus your attacks solely on their leader, Fezzerk - he is very fragile and will surrender once his health drops a bit. After that, you can either kill him or chase him away. If you kill him, you will obtain his two-handed axe +1.

After dealing with the goblins, enter the windmill through the damaged back wall. There are two levers here. The "brake" lever will stop the windmill and allow you to free Barcus. The "release brake" lever will speed up the windmill and kill Barcus, prematurely ending his storyline. Free the gnome and talk to him, and he will tell you about his backpack in the windmill's basement. Inside the backpack, you'll find some minor loot, including an explosive bag of runic powder. The quest will conclude - if you saved Barcus, you will begin his storyline, which consists of several quests and lasts until the end of the game. You will meet him again in the first act, specifically in the Underdark, at Grymforge.
