Baldurs Gate 3: How to disarm traps?
Falling into a trap in BG3 will always cause you a lot of trouble. Our guide explains how to recognize traps and how to deactivate them, as well as how to use the traps yourself.
Last update:
On this page of the guide to Baldurs Gate 3 you will find information how to find and disarm traps. This knowledge is essential for keeping your characters alive as triggering a trap might instantly kill one or even a few characters.

Traps can be mostly encountered while exploring various dungeons, caves, crypts, and similar locations. They can defend access to, for example, secret chambers or chests with valuable loot.
Causing a trap to activate always mean serious trouble - they have an area of effect in which they deal massive damage. In the most pessimistic scenario, if the defense throws fail, your whole team will lose all health points and die.

To disarm a trap, you can use Trap Disarm Toolkit. These toolkits can be found in the game's world along with other loot. You can also buy them from encountered merchants. They are sold by, e.g. Arron in the Druid Grove.
Disarming traps works in similar manner to using lockpicks for opening locks:
- A successful attempt at disarming trap will enable you to keep the toolkit.
- A failure means that you will lose the toolkit.
The effectiveness of using the Trap Disarm Toolkit depends on the level of Sleight of Hand character skill. It is best to pass the toolkit to a party member who has high level of Sleight of Hand skill.

Before disarming a trap, first you must correctly find it. A perception check takes place automatically whenever you get close to a trap.
- If the perception check ends successfully, the trap becomes identified and you can start disarming it.
- If the perception check fails, then you should try walking near a trap with a different character. A character that has high level of Perception has greater chances of detecting a trap.

Right click on a trap and select the Disarm option.

An attempt at disarming a trap is a skill test related to Dexterity. If a dice throw ends with high enough value, the trap becomes disarmed.
You should save your game before each attempt at disarming a trap. This will not only enable you to keep your Trap Disarm Toolkit, but to avoid accidentally triggering the trap as well. The latter might lead to seriously wounding or even killing your character.
