An Italian video game publisher and distributor owned by Digital Bros. 505 Games is headquartered in Calabasas, California, and publishes games for PCs, consoles and mobile devices. The company has offices in various European countries, as well as in China and Japan.
505 Games was founded in 2006 by the Italian company Digital Bros. Headquartered in Milan (later relocated to the United States, specifically to Calabasas), the company initially focused on publishing Nintendo DS games.
In 2015, 505 Games announced the acquisition of the rights to the Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons franchise from Starbreeze, a Swedish company. That same year, both entities entered a partnership under which 505 Games agreed to publish OVERKILL's The Walking Dead and Payday 2: Crimewave Edition.
In January 2016, the Italian publisher shared its future plans, indicating that from then on, it would focus on publishing games based on its own brands. Shortly thereafter, titles such as Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Control were added to the company's catalog.
In January 2021, 505 Games acquired the Australian team Infinity Plus Two, whose portfolio included the Puzzle Quest series. In March, the company acquired the Ghostrunner franchise, purchasing it from All In! Games, a Polish company, for €5 million. That same year, we learned that 505 Games would publish Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, a spiritual successor to the iconic Suikoden series. In June 2022, 505 Games announced that it had acquired D3 Go! and by extension, the rights to the Puzzle Quest franchise.
2023 proved to be a busy year for 505 Games, as they released a number of titles then. These included pretty successful productions, like Ghostrunner 2, and those less lucky, like Crime Boss: Rockay City.
In November 2023, we learned that Digital Bros., the parent company of 505 Games, intended to lay off approximately 30% of its employees. As a result, in February 2024, 505 Games was forced to close its offices in Germany, Spain, and France. Furthermore, February 2024 brought news of the sale of the Control franchise to Remedy Entertainment, for which the latter had to pay €17 million. Despite the sale, 505 Games was to remain the publisher of Control until the end of 2024.
505 Games kicked off the 2024 release year with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake, but it failed to replicate the success of the original. The same was true for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, released shortly after, which received solid ratings and "Mostly Positive" reviews on Steam, but its launch went largely unnoticed.
