Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 has a lock picking mechanic. With the help of a lockpick, you can break into a chest or room and get the items inside them. On this page, you will learn how the lock pick mini-game works and how to obtain spare lockpicks.

How does lock picking work?

Opening locks in KCD 2 involves a simple, dexterity-based mini-game. To complete it, you must have at least one lockpick in your inventory.

  1. A picture of a lock will appear on the screen. Using the mouse or analog stick, guide the lockpick (round shape) until it is in the right place. You will recognize the correct placement when the cursor changes its color to gold.
  2. Press the button responsible for rotating the lock (D key on the keyboard).
  3. While doing this, you must simultaneously move the pick so that the cursor is always in the same part of the lock. Changing color of the cursor.
  4. If you manage to fully rotate the mechanism, the lock will open.

If you start moving the lock when the cursor is not in its place, you risk breaking the pick. The destroyed lockpick makes a sound that may attract the attention of nearby NPCs.

It's also worth remembering that your level of thievery skills directly affects what kind of locks you can open. If your level is too low, it will be impossible to set the pick in the right spot. When developing this skill, it's worth starting with locks marked as very easy and easy.

How to develop lock picking skills?

Skills related to lock picking are assigned to the thievery skill tree (skills tab in the player's menu). You level up these skills by simply opening locks and pickpocketing.

You can also learn thievery from some skill trainers. These are, e.g.:

  1. Pavlena (after completing the Bad Blood quest);
  2. Bonnie (southern part of the Trosky region);
  3. Rat (Kuttenberg town).

A few perks are related to lock picking. These persk are:

  1. Silent Fiddler (Thievery, Level 6) - using a lockpick does not generate sound, and the sound of a broken lockpick is 75% quieter.
  2. Mischief Artist (Thievery, Level 14) - successful pickpocketing or lock opening provides a temporary +3 bonus to theft and sneaking.
  3. Master Thief (Thievery, Level 18) - easy locks are opened instantly - without mini-games and committing a crime.

Where to get lockpicks?

You can find lockpicks on corpses of the dead bandits. Outlaws carry them quite often.

Some traders sell lockpicks. One of such merchants is Jurg Thomel in Troskowitz.

You can obtain the first lockpicks in the early stage of the game during the quest for the miller.

Some perks will help you in recovering and producing lockpicks.

  1. Locksmith (Craftsmanship, Level 12) - thievery skill increases by 3 points when picking locks. Every effectively crafted item additionally provides you with 1 to 3 lockpicks.
  2. Tool Master (Thievery, Level 8) - lockpicks are 30% more durable. After a successful lock opening, one broken lockpick will return to your inventory.
