EA Sports (originally known as Electronic Arts Sports Network) is a brand used by Electronic Arts since 1991 to promote its annual sports game releases. From 2000 to 2008, EA Sports also operated a spin-off brand, EA Sports Big, which focused on more arcade-style sports games.

EA Sports is primarily known for its sports series, launched in the 1990s and typically released on an annual basis. These include series dedicated to sports such as soccer (FIFA), ice hockey (NHL), basketball (NBA Live), American football (Madden NFL), golf (PGA Tour), and mixed martial arts (EA Sports MMA / EA Sports UFC). Over the years, brands dedicated to boxing (Fight Night), college basketball, college and indoor football, baseball, cricket, tennis, and rugby have also become important parts of the company's portfolio. There is also room for management games (FIFA Manager) and racing games (NASCAR or F1).

One of the distinguishing features of EA Sports games is that a significant number of them hold official licenses for the respective sports organizations. Over the years, Electronic Arts has come to dominate this market, a position for which it has frequently faced criticism. As a result, most of the company's sports games let players control real-life teams and athletes, taking part in authentic competitions. In most cases, players also encounter authentic club logos and colors, and compete in real-world stadiums.

History

Electronic Arts' first simulation-style sports game was John Madden Football, released in 1988 for Apple II computers. Although unlicensed, it marked the first time in the company’s history that a game featured the name and likeness of a famous sports figure. However, it wasn’t until the series’ second installment, released in 1991, that EA executives decided to use the Electronic Arts Sports Network (EASN) logo. Initially, it was purely a marketing tactic, designed to mimic a real-life television station broadcasting live sports events. In 1993, the brand was renamed EA Sports, with the goal of applying it to all future Electronic Arts sports games. The opening animation for all EA Sports games featured the voice of American journalist Andrew Anthony. The brand's motto became: "If it's in the game, it's in the game," reflecting how their games were simulators.

In 1994, Madden NFL '94 was released, marking EA Sports' first game to feature official licenses, in this case from the NFL. A year earlier, the first installment of Electronic Arts' best-selling sports franchise, the FIFA series, debuted - initially unlicensed and released under the name FIFA International Soccer. Since then, in addition to the annual main installments, the series has seen numerous special editions released to coincide with World Cup and European Championship events, as well as two installments focusing on the UEFA Champions League (the UEFA Champions League subseries) and one devoted exclusively to the English Premier League (The F.A. Premier League Stars 2001). Between 1990 and 1994, three other series were also launched, all of which are still in development today: PGA Tour Golf (1990), NHL Hockey (1991), and NBA Live (1994).

The 1990s were a period of exceptionally dynamic growth for EA Sports, during which, alongside its key sports franchises, a number of now-discontinued series also emerged. These included the professional boxing series Fight Night (1998–2011), the college sports franchises NCAA Football (1993–2013) and NCAA Basketball (1998–2009), as well as Rugby (1994–2007), Triple Play Baseball/MVP Baseball (1995–2006), and Cricket (1996–2006). The company's portfolio also included racing games, such as the Andretti Racing series (1991–1996), NASCAR (1997–2009), and F1 (2000–2003). In 1997, the first EA Sports management game, FIFA Soccer Manager, was released, starting a series that continued until 2013 (as The FA Premier League Manager, Total Club Manager, and finally simply FIFA Manager).

Between 2000 and 2008, EA Sports created a spin-off brand called EA Sports Big. Unlike its older sibling, it focused on sports games with a more arcade-style approach, including series such as SSX, FIFA Street, NBA Street, and NFL Street. However, since most of the games under this brand were developed within EA Sports studios, the decision was made to discontinue EA Sports Big in 2008, with some of its series later continued under the main EA Sports label. In the mid-2000s, Electronic Arts began to experience weaker financial results, leading to the decision in subsequent years to discontinue most of EA Sports' less popular franchises. Thus, the Formula 1 license was acquired by Codemasters Software, while the NASCAR license went to the British studio Eutechnyx. Among the longest-running brands, only the Fight Night series (ended in 2011), NCAA Football, and FIFA Manager (discontinued in 2013) remained.

In April 2009, EA Sports joined PlayStation Home, offering users the chance to play various minigames - such as poker, golf, boxing, and kart racing - within virtual spaces called the EA Sports Complex. However, the service failed to gain popularity and was eventually discontinued by Sony in March 2015. In August 2011, EA Sports launched a subscription-based service called EA Sports Season Ticket, which in 2014 was replaced by the more comprehensive EA Access, offering access to a wider range of Electronic Arts titles.

Over the years, the company gradually expanded its portfolio with new brands, including Grand Slam Tennis (2009–2012), the motion-controlled EA Sports Active series (2009–2010), and the mixed martial arts series EA Sports MMA / EA Sports UFC. Nevertheless, EA Sports continued to focus primarily on its longest-running franchises, some of which remained exclusive to consoles. At the same time, the company actively engaged in the mobile gaming market, releasing specially adapted versions of its most prominent EA Sports titles.

Things began to gain momentum in December 2020, when Codemasters was acquired by Electronic Arts for $1.2 billion. The transaction, which closed in the first quarter of 2021, brought Codemasters under the wing of EA Sports; along with the studio, EA Sports gained its development teams and all of its franchises, led by GRID, DiRT, F1, and Project CARS. Furthermore, in May 2021, Metalhead Software, creators of the Super Mega Baseball series, joined the EA Sports family.

The end of EA Sports' FIFA series and restructuring

In October 2021, reports emerged that the ongoing cooperation between EA Sports and FIFA was in jeopardy. Both parties reportedly reached an impasse in negotiations: while EA Sports sought the right to use the FIFA brand in ventures beyond its flagship franchise (esports), the federation wanted to retain exclusive control over that business. Additionally, FIFA demanded that the licensing fees be raised to $1 billion for each four-year World Cup cycle.

EA Sports concluded that, since the FIFA brand had little influence on the success of its flagship series, it could end its partnership with the federation and release future football games under a new name. This was carried out, and FIFA 23 became the last game in the series released under the EA Sports banner. The publisher’s next football game was announced as EA Sports FC.

In June 2023, Electronic Arts announced the completion of a comprehensive corporate restructuring. As a result, the company was split into two main divisions, each operating independently: EA Entertainment and EA Sports. Cam Weber was appointed as the head of EA Sports.
