Your horse is your primary method of travel in Ghost of Yotei. You need it to quickly traverse the game world and set up camp, and when choosing your horse, the game lets you know it will stay with you until the end of the adventure. Given the importance of mount mechanics and the frequency of combat, you may be wondering: can the horse die? On this guide page, we've described whether your horse can die during gameplay or during the story.

Can the horse die during gameplay?
The answer is no – your mount is completely immortal during gameplay, and the game is designed to prevent the horse from any harm. While Atsu can engage in combat on horseback and fall into enemy ambushes, where enemy ronin can set traps for your horse or attempt to shoot her from her mount, the animal itself cannot be harmed. In the worst case scenario, your horse will throw you off and run away, and even then you can summon it again after the fight by whistling without any negative consequences.
The developers also ensured the horse's safety during exploration. Although Ezo is full of steep cliffs and deep pools of water, none of these obstacles can harm your mount. The game places invisible walls whenever any activity would be potentially dangerous for it – your horse will refuse to jump from high cliffs or enter deep water. Therefore, you don't have to worry about it – you can't lose the animal.
Can the horse die during the story?
The answer here is also no. Although Atsu's mount faithfully sticks with its owner and takes her on many dangerous missions, it survives the story. Your horse is unharmed during any of the cut-scenes, and the game has no story branches that could end badly for it. Your mount will always survive until the credits and will accompany you even into the endgame, after completing the main story.
