The shamisen songs in Ghost of Yotei can be treated as secrets and collectibles. This guide explains how to learn new songs, how to use the shamisen, and what are the practical uses of the melodies you play. Obtaining 100% of the songs can be very rewarding in the game (and will also reward you with a trophy).

How to play shamisen and what are the uses of the songs?

  1. Unlocking new songs for the shamisen isn't just for earning trophies; it also has practical uses. After playing a song, the wind can guide Atsu to specific locations, such as those with collectibles. This can be very helpful in discovering certain secrets and additional locations. Unfortunately, songs don't cover all types of collectibles, only selected ones.
  2. Atsu plays the instrument in selected cut-scenes and quests, but you can also play it while exploring the world. Swipe left on the Dualsense controller's touchpad to display a list of known songs and to select one. You can also view the list of known songs (along with their descriptions) in the heroine's inventory window.

After playing the song, we recommend opening the world map, as in addition to the wind, a black line may appear on it. If it leads to a very distant location, first use fast travel and then play the shamisen again.

Atsu's Song

  1. Unlocked automatically at the beginning of the game. After starting the first chapter, Atsu will return to her family home. You'll have several sequences from the heroine's youth, one of which will involve learning to play the shamisen under her mother's guidance.
  2. This song is the only one that has no practical use during exploration and it doesn't lead to any collectibles. Atsu will play it several times during the main storyline.

Song of Shrines

  1. This song doesn't unlock at a specific location in the game. During the campaign, regularly set up a camp (hold left on the D-pad while riding a horse – you must have enough space around you). After setting up a camp, a villager may appear, talking with Atsu about the shamisen – this is random. This encounter will prompt Atsu to play a new song, which will be added to your collection.
  2. This song can lead to undiscovered shrines, locations where you can find charms.

If you're having trouble triggering the encounter, try visiting and completing a few shrines yourself first. Also try to set up camp in different places in the world (in our case, the scene happened in the Ishikari Plain region).

Song of Spirit

  1. Visit Master Heijiro's Garden - it is one of the locations in the first region, Yotei Grasslands. Atsu will associate this place with her childhood, and you can hold the touchpad in various places in the garden and see scenes from the heroine's past. Eventually, you'll meet Heijiro in the present and reach a place where you can play a song together.
  2. This song can lead to Bamboo Strikes, which are locations with mini-games that extend the spirit bar.

Song of the Wolf

  1. This song isn't unlocked at a specific location. Complete wolf dens by helping your friendly wolf rescue other wolves from poachers. After completing several of these activities, you'll unlock a new song.
  2. This song can lead to wolf dens. Completing these locations rewards you with skill points for the wolf's skill tree. Additionally, later in the game, you can unlock the option to play this song to summon the wolf to take over an enemy location together. This must be done before attacking the first enemy in the enemy camp.

Song of Revenge

  1. Visit the Musician's Camp in the Tokachi Range region. Here, you'll encounter a ronin playing a shamisen. You can give him some coins and then play the song for him. Eventually, Atsu will learn a new melody.
  2. This song can lead to the Yotei Six camps, larger enemy locations where, after regaining control, you can also find an Altar of Reflection (a free skill point).

Song of Well-Being

  1. Visit the Shamisen Practice place located in the northwestern part of the Ishikari Plain region. Here, you can play the shamisen alone, and Atsu will compose a new song.
  2. This song can lead to hot springs, locations that permanently extend the heroine's health bar.

Song of the Ainu

  1. Visit the Cukpet Hills Camp in the southeastern part of the Nayoro Wilds region - this may require a short climb. Here, you will meet a musician with whom, after a short conversation, you can play a new song on the shamisen together.
  2. This song can lead to Ainu items, collectibles, of which there are a total of 30 in the game. They also help in upgrading the Robes for Sitturaynu, an armor you can also unlock in the Nayoro Wilds.

Song of Vanity

  1. Visit the Shamisen Practice site in the central part of the Teshio Ridge region. Here, you can play the shamisen alone, and Atsu will compose a new song.
  2. This song can lead to cosmetic items, like new headgear and masks for the main character. These items do not affect Atsu's stats or her equipment.
