Ghost of Yotei isn’t entirely linear - you can choose the order in which you tackle story missions. After a few hours of play, you’ll face your first choice, with two regions opening up. Even though you’ll need to complete both, you might be wondering which one to tackle first. On this guide page, we explain whether it’s better to head to the Ishikari Plain or the Tokachi Range first.

Should you finish Ishikari Plain or Tokachi Range first?

While this choice isn’t critical - you’ll eventually complete both regions and can always leave one for the other - it’s helpful to know where to start. We recommend heading to the Tokachi Range first, saving the Ishikari Plain for later.

The Tokachi Range is a much shorter area than the Ishikari Plain. There are fewer story quests and more exploration, letting you clear the region faster. You’ll also get the odachi, a weapon made for taking on heavily armored brutes. By contrast, on the Ishikari Plain, you’ll get a yari - a spear, effective against sickle-wielding foes. Sickle wielders mostly appear on the Ishikari Plain itself, so you should get the odachi first.

Unlike the Tokachi Range, the road to the Ishikari Plain is initially blocked - you’ll need to complete a fairly long main quest to unlock it. The enemies you encounter here use flaming weapons, which are very dangerous. Additionally, the final boss of the Ishikari Plain is a heavily armored warrior with an odachi - facing him without an odachi of your own can be very difficult. We therefore recommend tackling the Tokachi Range first, then moving on to the Ishikari Plain.
