The bow is the standard ranged weapon in Ghost of Yotei and proves extremely useful in combat. You can pick it up early in the game, just after finishing the story prologue. On this guide page, you’ll learn how to get your first bow, upgrade it and develop its related abilities.

How do you get your first bow?

You’ll get your first bow soon after finishing the prologue and visiting Atsu’s family home. Head northwest to Yotei’s Shadow Inn and reclaim it from Saito’s minions.

Shortly after, you’ll meet Ran, a craftswoman who specializes in bows and upgrades. She'll offer you one of her bows. Unfortunately, even the more affordable Hankyu is probably too much for your budget this early in the game. It costs 300 mon.

To quickly earn money for that weapon, try completing one of the bounty quests posted on the board in front of the inn. It’s an easy way to earn your first paycheck, which you can use to buy basic gear.

Once you have enough money, return to Ran. You can use fast travel to do so. Alternatively, if you set up camp, Ran might come by herself and offer to sell you a bow.

What's the difference between the Hankyu and Yumi bows?

  1. The cheaper Hankyu bow is a smaller weapon. It does less damage but compensates with a faster rate of fire. It costs 300 mon.
  2. The pricier Yumi bow costs 2000 mon. It deals more damage and can even pierce helmets. However, its drawback is a noticeably longer draw time.

How do you upgrade your bow?

You can upgrade bows directly through Ran, who appears in hubs across nearly every region. You can also find special weapon kits throughout the game, letting you change your bows’ appearance.

Atsu's bow-related skills are grouped into a separate skill tree. If you want to specialize in ranged combat, it's worth developing them. Some armor sets and charms can also add modifiers that boost bow performance.
