Ghost of Yotei: How to unlock the rifle and pistol?

In Ghost of Yotei, you can acquire firearms, which are very useful for attacking enemies from a distance and stopping enemy melee attacks. Our guide explains where to find the Tanegashima matchlock rifle and the Tanzutsu matchlock pistol. We also covered firearm upgrades and the resulting perks.

How to obtain the Tanegashima matchlock rifle?

1. It may be a bit of a disappointment to learn that both firearms are only obtainable after unlocking the final region, Oshima Coast in the game's second chapter. We have described this in more detail on the page How to unlock the Oshima Coast Gatehouse?.
2. The journey from the Yotei Grasslands to the Oshima Coast is part of the main storyline. During it, Atsu will be accompanied by several other characters. It involves a series of battles and during one of them you will reach the place where Tanegashima is stored.

1. Once unlocked, the rifle is ideal for single, powerful shots – try to aim at larger and elite enemies. There's a chance you'll defeat them with a single shot, and in the worst-case scenario, they'll take serious damage. Alternatively, you can aim at explosive barrels, which, starting in the sixth region, are often found in enemy camps and locations defended by enemies. A barrel explosion can kill even several enemies.
2. Do not use Tanegashima for short and medium-range combat. Unfortunately, this weapon has a very long reload time, and there's a risk that enemies will close in and attack you before you can shoot again. The weapon's slow reload can be hastened by items like Ginji's Guard Armor, which you can obtain by meeting Ginji in the Oshima Coast and completing his short side quest.
3. Later in the game, you can unlock fragmentation rounds for the Tanegashima. Save them for the strongest enemies. Enemies hit with it can be slowed and made vulnerable to melee attacks.

How to obtain the Tanzutsu matchlock pistol?

1. The pistol can be easily missed, as it's not acquired during the main storyline. After reaching Oshima Coast, you must visit Matchlock Murata's Workshop – located in the northwestern part of the region.
2. Murata will inform you that he was robbed. This starts the side quest to find the bandits. You can find them north of Miyama Village.

1. By dealing with the bandits, Atsu will automatically add the pistol to her inventory, and upon returning to Murata, he will allow you to keep this weapon as a reward for dealing with his problem.
2. The matchlock pistol is a quickfire weapon, so when selected from the weapon radial menu, it is activated without aiming by a single press of a button. It's an excellent weapon for parrying an enemy attack (fire at the last moment before the attack reaches Atsu) and for increasing enemy stagger.

How to upgrade firearms?

1. Murata can upgrade both firearms at his workshop, although this isn't free. You must provide him with coins, crafting materials, which include rare weapon parts found in the Oshima Coast region (loot enemy bodies and search chests in enemy camps).
2. Upgrades can increase damage dealt and the maximum number of bullets carried. Additionally, in the case of the rifle, you will gain access to the previously mentioned fragmentation rounds.
