Your horse will be your closest companion Ghost of Yotei, and soon after starting the game, you’ll be tasked with choosing a specific mount. Since each steed has a distinct look, you might be wondering whether this choice affects gameplay. On this page of the guide, you’ll find tips on what to consider when picking a horse and how to customize its look later with new saddles.

How to get your first horse?

Atsu automatically gets her first horse right after finishing the prologue and defeating the Snake. Soon after, you’ll unlock the open world which you can explore on horseback.

You can summon a horse at almost any time. Just press left on the D-pad.

How to change your horse?

One of the first quests the game gives you, right after the prologue, is to explore the ruins of Atsu's family home. The flashbacks contain a series of tutorials that cover the game’s basic mechanics. During that, a new side mission, Old Trails, will also become available.

Your objective will be to locate the Old Stable. It’s situated in the western part of the Yotei Grasslands region. Rescue the owner from Saito’s minions, then join him in tracking down the runaway horses. The mission is fairly straightforward, and along the way, you’ll witness another flashback from Atsu’s childhood.

After finding the horses, you’ll have to make a choice. You’ll have to decide whether to keep the horse you received in the prologue or swap it for one of the horses you just found.

The choice has no impact on gameplay! All horses behave the same way and don’t have any hidden stats. The choice of your mount is purely cosmetic. Choose wisely - once you pick your horse, you can’t change it later.

How to get new saddles?

You can unlock new saddles for your horse as you progress through the game. These are purely cosmetic and let you further customize your horse’s appearance.

You can purchase saddles from the merchant Konupas. You can come across her while exploring the open world, or find her in Husko Kotan in the Nayoro Wilds region. Along with new saddles, Konupas also sells dyes for customizing your existing gear. Like with other dyes, you can purchase Konupas’s items using flowers.

You can also pick up an extra saddle at the Kamikawa Trading Post in the Teshio Mountains.
